May 17, 1945.
Very interesting battlefield content. USS LST-562 Tank Landing Ship participated, in April and May 1945, in the landings during the Battle of Tarakan Island, Borneo. That mission is referred to in the letter. Launched 28 April 1944, LST-562 was commanded by Lieutenant Richard N. Shaw. She received two battle stars for service during WWII.
"I am at sea tonight, headed on a little mission, and I don't know just when I'll be able to get this letter in the Mail but if all works well, I'll be able to get it on the PBM headed back to one of our quieter bases. I suppose that you've heard about the invasion of Borneo not too long ago. We were part of the outfit that landed the Australian troops there on 'D Day'. That was some show and the Japs really took a good shellacking. We stayed right there on the spot for several days and saw the scrap from the front row. I got on the beach and picked up a Jap bicycle and have it aboard ship now. We didn't lose a man on our ship but certainly had some close calls - I'll tell you about them when we sitting in Hawthorne over that bottle of Scotch."
"I certainly hated to hear about your losing Bum. We will just have to start over in the bird-dog business... The news of Germany's falling gives us all more strength and courage to fight these Japs. We are praying for that Air Force to get over here for that is a big factor when it comes to neutralizing their strong points. These Japs are a mighty clever little bunch of ------ and don't let anybody try to tell you otherwise...
