No. 529 1915 SINGAPORE: The MUTINY SOLD
MARTINIQUE - WW2   MARTINIQUE (cover) - WW2   17. March 1915 cover with d/r. SINGAPORE p/m. to GB. Includes letter on headed notepaper of DREW & NAPIER, Solicitors, Singapore.

For a short period after 15th Feb. some rather dramatic postal history was made in Singapore. CENSORSHIP clamped down hard on despatch of mail. Even letters to UK were scrutinised thoroughly and black-ink delations made if neccessary.

My Dear Morris,

........ I came off guard 3 hours before they were shot down. The car I was using left me to take the new Commandant up to the Camp where he was going to live with my junior Sub; for 4 days before going into his permanent quarters. Both poor fellows were shot down without a dog's chance. So far 5 mutineers have been publicly shot. In great haste Signed Jos JHGS.

On 15th Feb. 1915 a party of 100 mutineers went to TANGLIN Barracks where 309 Germans were interned, including members of the EMDEN crew. The mutineers tried to pursuade the Germans to join them. On 20th Feb. the last of the mutineers were rounded up. On 22nd Feb. Court Marshalls started.

Full details included.

No. 537 1976 HMS SULTAN - Smyrne SOLD
MARTINIQUE - WW2   MARTINIQUE (cover) - WW2   HMS SULTAN [Ironclad of 1870.] Smyrna Aug. 1876 [TURKEY]

My darling Ella, I hope you received my last letter alright. We left Bashike Bay (that is the "Sultan" did) last Monday for a bit of a cruise in around here ("Smyrna") on Tuesday morning were we found the Russian & Italian Fleets together with an Austrian ship & a French man. The Russian Fleet consists of 3 vessels one of which has the Grand Duke Alexis on board or some such name as that. The Grand Duke Alexis is you know half brother of the Duke of Edinburgh so of course they are just friends and are with each other every night. Yesterday the Duke (our captain) gave a dinner ball the Captain of the different man of war. There were 1 Russian Admiral & 8 Captains 1 Italian Admiral & 5 Capts, I Austrian Admiral & Captain & 1 French Captain. To night the officers of our ship here invited the officers of the Russian Flag Ship to dinner so there will be a grand feast I expect. My leg has not set yet but does not give me any pain if I keep it quite still. All the officers come and see me more or less during the day as I have lots of company & they are all very kind to me. But I do not believe I told you that I had broken my leg. Well I broke it about a week ago just about 3 inches above the arch of my right leg. I was skylarking with a Lieutenant. Myself & another Midshipman we were trying to put the Lieutenant on the Deck but he got us both around the waist & we all fell in a lump & unluckily for me I fell underneath & my leg got twisted under me as I fell & it gave way & thus been on my back ever since. It is such a nuisance as I can't move about in my own much & am obliged to be still. We leave Smyna tomorrow for Bashike Bay again as the Admiralty has telegraphed he want's us back again we start as 5 AM & I suppose in shall be back (if we go quite fast) in the evening of the same day as it is not very far. Give my best love to Mandy & everybody I remain ever your loving brother Geoff. PS. Letters will be most thankfully received. What do you think of our crest.

To: Miss Richards, Cothele, Cardiff, South Wales.
